The thing about small towns.

The thing about small towns, is you go along in your early years meeting people who love it and will never leave, or hate it and can't wait to turn 18 and run as far away as possible. I was neither.

Going to university a mere 45 minutes away kept me close enough to visit, but gave me enough of a change. Living in the city is definitely different than having a forest in my backyard.

These days, I am enjoying being a city girl. I love being 2 blocks from my grocery store. No car payments means a little more money in my pocket. I can go anywhere and do anything within a 10 km radius. At any time. Also the fact that there are no mosquitoes is kind of amazing.

But I come home often to visit my parents. Part of it is to see them, but another part of it is to wind down. City life is a little busier than life out here. You can get caught up in the movement and all of a sudden your head is spinning.  Coming home gives me a chance to breathe, take a few minutes for myself and relax.

This is where I like to come and read. By the river. It's peaceful, beautiful and rejuvenating. I fall in love with my small hometown all over again in moments like these.

You never know where life is going to take you. In a year or two I may be hours away in an even bigger city. But I will know that a part of me will always belong to the countryside. A part of me will always call this place home. And who knows, maybe someday I will end up back here.

Road trippin'.

Tomorrow I'm getting behind the wheel and making the nearly 5-hour drive to the big T.O. A friend is getting married on Saturday, and I'm heading up a bit early to spend the weekend with another one of my BFFs! I don't see her nearly enough, so I'm pretty gosh darn excited for this weekend to kick-off!

I'll be back to regular programming on Monday. Have yourselves a fantastic weekend and keep it real, yo.

Exploring.

Coming from a small town, it's nice to explore other small towns.
And that's what a friend and I did last Sunday. We took advantage of the sunny weather and went exploring.

We ended up at a local coffee shop called Palms. Their chai lattes are to die for.
{me w/ the inventor of basketball himself}

This what I love most about summer. Spending time with my favourite people, visiting my favourite places, and throwing in some new places too. It's the perfect way to spend a weekend.

Does summer give you the desire to explore?

Beach weekend.

This weekend a couple girlfriends & I had planned to go to the beach. With a thunderstorm in the forecast all week, we didn't move forward with any concrete plans. Saturday morning, I made the last minute decision to go by myself. My mom and pup tagged along, and it ended up being a pretty great day. Above 30C, overcast with sunny periods, and a lovely breeze coming off the lake. No thunderstorms until we got home.

{for a while, I was the only one on the beach}

What did you do this weekend?

Insta-updates: This time of year.

This is one of my favourite times of the year. Here's an idea of why:

When the weather is perfect enough to wake up, throw on a t-shirt and go. Sunnies are obvs. necessary.

Hanging out with friends on the Sens Mile, cheering on our hockey team and enjoying a drink.

Going for runs along the canal in the sunshine. And the great pain that comes along with it.

Getting together with some great friends over card games; finally free from the confines of school to spend time with each other.

And getting together with other friends to enjoy the sunshine and "not tan" because no matter how much sun I get, it just doesn't happen.

What's your favourite time of year?

Trending retro.

Based on my stellar Pinterest trend-spotting techniques, I think that the warm weather will be bringing much more vintage inspired clothing. Retro sunglasses? High waisted bottoms? Corset tops? It all comes out with the sunshine.

These retro pants have a modern flare - colour. In this super-bright shade of red, they are so many trends in one. I love the button detailing too, so flattering.

Retro Accessories:

The bandana? These cat-eye sunglasses? They're the perfect way to accessorize your summer outfit. I love it all.

Back to the high-waist, vintage Levi's are back in a big way. But not as pants. I'm thinking the high-waisted denim cutoff is going to be big again this year. Especially when paired with a midriff skimming corset top. Perfect way to get yourself ready for the summer. Festival outfit, anyone?

Retro Bikinis:

Prints like polkadots, floral, and stripes. Bikini tops with a corset structure or halter style. High waisted bottoms that nearly reach your belly-button. I'm not a huge fan of the high bikini bottom, tbh, but I did score myself this bikini top for this summer already!

What do you think? Are you a fan of the retro trends?

Ombre.

Guys, guys, guys....

I'm thinking of going ombre for spring/summer.
Thoughts? Insight?

Trend of the Month: Pattern Mixing

Dynamite top; American Eagle skinnies; Payless wedges

Polka-dot explosion first comes to mind when I look back at theses photos. When I saw Marion's trend of the month link-up, I thought of my new polka-dotted jeans I just picked up over the weekend. Then came the task of figuring out what prints/patterns I wanted to put with them. After very little thought, my polka-dotted tank was a clear winner. I thought about going another step further and wearing my polka-dot shoes, but then realized that might be polka-dot overkill. So I just stuck to black wedges.

And sorry about the funny smudge on my lens. I didn't even notice until I had already uploaded the photos. I'll make sure that's cleaned for the future! Also, tomorrow you shall see the new hair colour! It's definitely darker but I'm curious to see how it'll show up in photos.

Paradise.

This was my weekend. This is why I am having such a hard time getting back to the real world. I haven't felt that happy and carefree in a long time.

The cottage was perfect: beautiful view, quiet lake and perfect weather. None of us wanted to leave on Monday, so we stayed until the last possible second and left just before dinner. All of us had full-time jobs to return to on Tuesday. I guess that's how you know you've grown up - you actually have commitments you need to keep. No more student life and doing whatever you want, whenever. Now we can't just skip class if something better comes up. We now have responsibilities to more people than just ourselves...

I guess we just have to make the best with the time we get. Like going on spontaneous trips like this, making silly memories that will last for years, and taking pictures every step of the way.

P.S. Happy belated Canada Day to all my Canadian peeps!
P.P.S. Happy 4th of July to all of my American friends!

A weekend re-cap.

It's the Victoria Day long weekend here in the Great White North. We've been experiencing some amazingly warm temperatures in the area, which has led to an awesome weekend. Today's a holiday, which means I'm on "vacation", so I'm not going to write anymore than this. Instead, I'll leave you with some photos of my weekend.

Classic car photo.

Costco bananas. Even they're HUGE.

My kitty sleeping. She looks like a bean.

Enjoying the sun.

The bffs. Love these ladies.

My version of paradise.

Holy yummy. It's the tropics in a glass.

Have a wonderful Monday! See ya tomorrow :)
